What is it:
3D printing is used to create physical plastic models direct from a computer design. Parts are printed “layer by layer” and are used to create accurate models for full scale design reviews before manufacture, functional prototype testing or for low cost assembly jigs.
Our Equipment:
We use a Stratasys Dimension FDM printer that builds parts in stong and durable ABS plastic. Layers are built up in 0.25mm steps and the largest part we can build in one print is 8″ x 8 ” x 12″. If a larger part than our build area is requried, we can build in sections. Parts can be printed in White, Green, Blue, Black, Red or Yellow.
Price Guide:
If you are interested in having a 3D model printed, printing costs around $4 per cubic centimeter of material used, however this can vary depending upon design geometry. Student discounted rates are available. We can accept most 3d files but an *.stl file is preferred.
Extra services – Polishing:
Traditionally, if a perfectly smooth model is required for painting etc, the printed part must be hand-sanded to remove the build ridges. New this year, Creativecorp is introducing FDM Chemical polishing to automatically reduce the visible ridges visible on the printed ABS part. The process works by “melting” the tiny build ridges together in a special gas leaving a smooth, watertight surface. Very little detail is lost and the surface is requires just a light sand to be perfectly smooth.
Advanced Applications:
- We can have ABS parts vacuum metallised in Chrome, Red Chrome or Gold for realistic metal finishes.
- Making low cost, fast turn around Investment casting and Sandcasting patterns.
- Assembly jigs and fixtures.
Design Guide:
- Keep wall thickesses larger than 0.5mm.
- Parts can be built solid or with a hollow, honeycomb structure.
- ABS bonds very well with Superglue or Zap.
- Circles and holes are best built on the X/Y plane.
- Plastic can be tapped, but we recommend using internally threaded brass inserts for durability.
